Biographical History
The Central of Georgia Railway, formed from its predecessor, The Central Railroad and Banking Company of Georgia in 1895 was a dominant force in the economic life of Georgia and parts of Alabama through the mid-twentieth century. Through its many branch and subsidiary lines, land holding companies, and agricultural experimentation, it controlled much of the region's transportation and was a strong influence in the rural development of the area.
(Cont.) The Eatonton Branch Railroad was organized in 1850 and completed a 22 mile line from Milledgeville, Ga., and connection with the Milledgeville & Gordon Railroad up to Eatonton, Ga., in 1853. The Eatonton was leased to the Central Rail Road & Banking Co. of Georgia in 1855, which continued to operate that road until 1893. There were two principal raids on this line by the Union Army in 1864.
(Cont.) In August, 1894, the Eatonton gained its independence from the Central Rail Road, and for several years was operated under contract by the Middle Georgia & Atlantic Railway, which was taken over, along with the Eatonton by the Central of Georgia Railway in 1897 and absorbed.
