Biographical History

Charles G. Buckingham and his younger brother Walter founded the Buckingham Brothers' bank in Boulder, Colorado, in 1874. This became the National State bank in 1877, then the First National bank in Boulder after a reorganization in 1933- 1934. Charles G. Buckingham was reputed to have been the oldest banker in the United States. His nephew Charles E. Buckingham (son of Walter) became president of the bank in 1940, succeeding his uncle Charles' successor Frank Tyler.

Both C. G. and C. E. Buckingham were active in Boulder community affairs. C. G. helped to establish the library at the University of Colorado, was instrumental in the construction of the Boulderado Hotel and gave the city a large tract of land in Left Hand Canyon for a park. His nephew C. E. Buckingham's main interests aside from banking were mountains and music.

From the description of Charles Buckingham collection 1876-1961 (bulk 1933-1961). (Boulder Public Library). WorldCat record id: 427269005
