Commissioned by the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra under a Ford Foundation grant. Composed 1954-55 under a Guggenheim Fellowship. First performance Knoxville, Tennessee, 10 November 1959, Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, David Van Vactor conductor.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.

Composed 1934-35. This suite is the final form of sketches originally made for a full-length ballet which was never performed. First performance under the title "That Tragic Muse, Five Impressions"(with no programmatic subtitles) by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago, 30 January 1936, Eric DeLamarter (to whom the work is dedicated) conducting. Because this work was one of the American compositions chosen for performance in connection with the Olympic Games in Germany, 1936, it was retitled "Olympia," with the following subtitles: 1. "Fate," 2. "The agonizing struggle,"

3. "The defeated," 4. "Relaxation," 5. "March." First performance (under original titles as given above) by the Illinois Symphony Orchestra of the Works Progress Administration, Chicago, 30 May 1937, the composer conducting.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.
