Biographical History
The University of Texas at Arlington traces its beginnings back to a private school, Arlington College, at the site in 1895. The school went through various ownerships and name changes before becoming part of The University of Texas system in 1967. UTA's centennial celebration began in August 1995 and ended in May 1996. The centennial celebrated the many changes the school has undergone in its evolution from a private elementary, intermediate, and high school to the graduate level university of today.

The University of Texas at Arlington was first established as Arlington College in 1895. The University has been known by eight names throughout its history: Arlington College, Carlisle Military Academy, Arlington Training School, Arlington Military Academy, Grubbs Vocational College, North Texas Agricultural College, Arlington State College, and The University of Texas at Arlington.
The Shorthorn, which replaced The Grubbonian, began as a monthly magazine in April of 1919. The student body selected the name Shorthorn during a campus-wide contest during which students submitted possible names. During 1922, The Shorthorn changed from a monthly to a weekly publication.

The UTA 1972-1973 Self-Study was formally initiated in Spring, 1972, for presentation to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in the process of its ten-year reaffirmation accreditation as a senior institution. Jack R. Woolf was the self-study director. Members of the University Committee on Committees served as the Steering Committee, which, in turn, oversaw the work of the eleven Standards Committees: Purpose, Organization and Administration, Educational Program, Financial Resources, Faculty, Library, Student Personnel, Physical Plant, Special Activities, Graduate Program, and Research.
Departmental studies committees were also formed, made up of faculty from each department. The subject matter of the departmental self-study paralleled that of the institutional self-study. Copies of the departmental self-study reports may be found in Series B of the collection; however, these reports were not included in the final published self-study.
