Biographical History

Anna Totman Beckwith was born on March 31, 1903, in Missoula, Montana, the daughter of George Henry and Eva Elizabeth Totman Beckwith. George Beckwith was a merchant and licensed trader with the C.H. Beckwith Company in St. Ignatius. Anna Beckwith graduated from St. Ignatius High School in 1921, and received a B.A. in Bacteriology in 1925 from the University of Montana. She entered the Johns Hopkins Hospital Training School For Nurses in Baltimore, Maryland, graduating in 1928. She worked at that facility as head nurse and assistant instructor for six years. She received a certificate from the Maryland State Board of Examiners of Nursing in 1929, and was appointed an American Red Cross nurse in 1930. Beckwith returned to Montana in 1934 to serve as superintendent of St. Peter's Hospital in Helena, resigning in 1941. At that time she was appointed executive secretary of the Montana State Board of Nursing, a position she held until her retirement in 1968.
