American author and politician.
Gulian C. Verplanck (1786-1870) was an American legislator and author. Born in New York City, he graduated from Columbia College (now Columbia University), New York City, in 1801, then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1807. He was a professor at General Theological Seminary in New York City for three years (1821-1824) but spent most of his life in politics and government. He was a member of the State assembly (1820-1823) and of the State senate (1838-1841), served in the Nineteenth, Twentieth, Twenty-first and Twenty-second Congresses (1825-1833), and was chairman of the Ways and Means Committee.
At the local level, he served as governor of the city hospital (1823-1865), regent (1826-1870) and vice chancellor (1858-1870) of the State university, and president of the board of commissioners of immigration (1846-1870), and was a member of the State constitutional convention in 1867 and 1868. He also ran unsuccessfully for Mayor in 1834.
