Biographical History

Mildred Hicks, Socialist reformer, was born 10 May 1880, in Bainbridge, Georgia, and died in 1961, in Thomasville, Georgia. She and her sister Mary (b. 17 December 1875, d. 1966, Thomas Co., Ga.), a retired teacher, became Socialists (1915); during the Depression they began work in a movement to limit the size of fortunes and inheritance; initiated the "Five Day Plan," (1931) and its revision, the "Work-for All Plan," (1933) with support from some congressmen, Socialist leaders, and local and national labor and farmer's union leaders. They joined Huey Long's "Share Our Wealth" campaign, founding a Bainbridge, Georgia, society for it (1934); their last appeals for the movement were made in 1937.
