Biographical History
Heberden (Oxford, M.D. 1795) was the only surviving son of William Heberden (1712-1786). He studied in London at St. George's Hospital and was physician there from 1793 to 1803. He was a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (1796) and belonged to the Royal Society. For most of his life he was physician in attendance on the king and queen of England, and he was chief consultant to George III in his last illness. He retired from active public practice in 1812, a widower with nine children; he spent the last fifteen years of his life writing and studying. His works are clear, accurate, and descriptive rather than original, one of the best known being a model of concise summary of pediatrics.
