Biographical History

John Milton Martin was born June 24, 1925 in Calhoun County, Alabama, the son of Samuel Ulysses Martin and Brazora Missouri (Calhoun) Martin. He graduated from high school in Ohatchee, Alabama, received B.S. and B.A. degrees from Jacksonville State University, a M.A. degree in History from the University of Alabama, and a Ph.D. in History from the University of North Carolina. Martin taught at the University of Alabama Center in Gadsden and at Tennessee Wesleyan, where he became chair of the Social Science Division, before coming to West Georgia College. In 1957 West Georgia College became a four-year institution and Dr. Martin came to Carrollton as the chairman of the Social Science Division, eventually becoming Dean of the Graduate School and later Vice-President and Dean of Academic Affairs, retiring in 1977. He received the first honorary alumnus award given by West Georgia College and later the Distinguished Service Award. The college yearbook was dedicated to him in 1961. Dr. Martin was very active in the First United Methodist Church of Carrollton. He was a member of the Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs. He served on the Board of Tanner Medical Center Hospital Authority and several other boards and committees. He died January 15, 1993. His wife, Jean (McConatha) Martin survives him. His legacy endures through a need-based scholarship offered by the University of West Georgia.
