Biographical History
Francis Adams, poet, novelist, commentator and radical was born at Malta, son of an army surgeon and novelist Bertha Jane Grundy Adams. Arrived in Australia 1884. In 1887 worked as a journalist and leader-writer with the Brisbane Courier and with William Lane's radical weekly. The Boomerang Prolific contributor of poems, short fiction and critical articles to The Bulletin. Returned to England in 1890. Achieved most contemporary fame with his anti-imperialist and anti-capitalist collection of poems Songs of the army of the night, which first appeared in Sydney in 1888. Other works include: Australian life (1892), John Webb's end (1891), The Melbournians (1892) and A child of the age (1894). Australian essays (1886) and The Australians (1893); Songs of the Army of the Night, Francis Adams, London: Vizetelly & Co., 1890.
