Professor of economics at the Middlesex County, New Jersey, campus of Rutgers, the State University.
Professor of economics at Rutgers University whose research interests included all of the Americas to the south of the United States, left-wing political movements, economic development, trade policy, labor movements and labor relations; was graduated from Columbia University with a B.A., 1940, and an M.A., 1941; served in the U.S. Army Air Force in Great Britain, 1943-1945; was awarded a Ph. D. from Columbia, 1950; joined the faculty at Rutgers, 1947, where, over the years, he taught courses in history, political science and labor studies; wrote over 30 books, including a classic study of organized labor in Latin America; as an activist, was opposed to communism, but condemned U.S. military intervention and support for dictatorships in Latin America while advocating measures to improve economic and social conditions there; frequently visited Latin America, mid-1940s-early 1980s (and less frequently in the following decade), sometimes with financial support from the American Federation of Labor (later the AFL/CIO), the United States Department of State, the Ford Foundation, the Rutgers University Research Council and the Agency for International Development (or its predecessors); retired from Rutgers, 1989, and was granted emeritus status.

His field of specialization, on which he has written frequently, is labor movements in Central and South America. During his extensive travels through the Americas, Jackson conducted interviews with politicians, labor leaders, diplomats, workers, businessmen, educators, and persons from all walks of life. Alexander wrote summaries of his interviews and recorded the substance of the conversations. He used the same procedure to record interviews in the United States and other countries.
