Joseph Fred Buzhardt (1924-1978) was a lawyer who succeeded John W. Dean as Counsel to the President on May 10, 1973, and remained in this position until 1974. He advised President Nixon on Watergate matters.
J. Fred Buzhardt was born February 21, 1924. Father, J. Buzhardt Sr., had a law partnership with Strom Thurmond. J. Fred Jr. received his B.S. from U.S. Military Academy (West Point) in 1946, and LL. B. from University of South Carolina in 1952. Lawyer 1952-1958; assistant to Senator Strom Thurmond 1958-1966; lawyer again from 1966-1969; Special Assistant to Chair, Blue Ribbon Defense Panel, 1969; General Counsel, Department of Defense, 1970-1973; Special Counsel to President, 1973-1974; Counsel to President, 1974; returned to law practice, 1974-1978. He died on December 16, 1978.
