Biographical History

The Bay Area Physicians for Human Rights (BAPHR) is a physicians' organization devoted to improving health care for gays, lesbians and bisexuals. Founded in the homophobic climate of 1977, BAPHR also provides support and information to health care professionals. BAPHR spawned a national organization, American Association of Physicians for Human Rights (AAPHR) in 1981. AAPHR then came to be called the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA). In the early days of the AIDS epidemic, BAPHR offered free information and HIV screening at their annual Health Fair. BAPHR works in conjunction with other health advocacy groups on a local and national level. In 1989, BAPHR joined forces with the AIDS Task Force of the San Francisco Medical Society to advocate a needle exchange program for the city of San Francisco.
