Biographical History

Harvey Henderson was born Dec. 2, 1841, near Walton, N.Y., son of John Henderson (18001-1886) and Nancy Bailey Henderson (1803-1868). In September 1861, he enlisted in F.L. England's company raised in Delaware County, N.Y. to join James Dickinson's Guard. The unit was later designated Company I of the 89th Regiment of New York Infantry. With his regiment, he fought in the Carolinas, Virginia, and Maryland, taking part in in the in the defenses of Washington, D. C. (1861, Dec. 6 - 1862, Jan. 2); the expedition to Hatteras Inlet, N.C. (1862, Jan. 6 - 13); Maryland Campaign (1862, Sept. 4-20); battle of Fredericksburg, Va. (1862, Dec. 11-15); the siege of Suffolk, Va. (1863, Apr. 12 - May 4); Dix's Peninsula Campaign (1863, June 24 - July 7); siege operations against Forts Wagner and Gregg, Morris Island, Fort Sumter and Charleston (1863, Aug. 14 - Sept. 7); Butler's operations on south side of the James and against Petersburg and Richmond (1864, May 4 - 28), and siege of Petersburg and Richmond (1864, June 16 - 1865, Apr. 2). On Aug. 11, 1862, Henderson was promoted to corporal, and on December 28, 1863, to Sergeant. On Sept. 20, 1864, he was captured outside the picket lines. Confined at the Libby Prison, he was later transferred to Danville, Va. and Salisbury, N.C. He was exchanged on Feb. 28, 1865 and returned home. He was discharged by reason of expiration of the terms of his service on Apr. 21, 1865. On Feb. 13, 1867, he married Ella Cline Seward (1845 -1926). Henderson died at Huntington, Long Island March 10, 1930 and was buried at Walton Cemetery. Harvey Henderson was grandfather of Cyrus Henderson Peake (b. 1900), the Professor of Asian History at the Claremont Graduate School.
