Biographical History
Dr. Raymond Leroy Murray, professor emeritus and pioneer of the atomic age, was born on February 14, 1920 in Lincoln, Nebraska and died June 22, 2011 in Raleigh, North Carolina. He received his B.S. degree in education in 1940, M.S. degree in physics and mathematics in 1941 both from the University of Nebraska and his Ph.D in physics from the University of Tennessee in 1950. Dr. Murray joined a new nuclear engineering program at NC State as a physics professor in 1950. He was a key figure in establishing and operating North Carolina state's nuclear reactor, the world's first ever to operate on a college campus. After retiring from teaching at N.C. State University in 1980, Dr. Murray remained active in research and consulting, and as an advocate of the beneficial aspects of nuclear energy. Dr. Murray passed away on June 22, 2011.
