Biographical History

The U.S. Committee for the U.N. Fund for Women was founded in 1983 with the purpose of fostering government and public support for the U.N. Voluntary Fund for the Decade for Women (1976-1985) and its programs and projects benefitting women in developing countries. In 1985 the Voluntary Fund was renamed the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and in 1998 the U.S. Committee for the U.N. Fund for Women was granted special consultative status, allowing it to designate official representatives to the United Nations.
