Biographical History

Charles Anzalone (1888-1959) was born in Cefalidina, Sicily, and came to the United States with his parents in 1896. He worked for six years as a laborer on Louisiana sugar plantations and then moved in 1902 to Independence, Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, to pick strawberries. He became a farmer and leader in the strwberry industry, and was prominent in business and civic affairs. Anzalone, a devoted follower of Huey Long, was active in local politics; he was alderman and then mayor of Independence, and later a state representative.
