Eduard Dietl (b. July 21, 1890, Bavaria-d. June 23, 1944), German general, wounded four times during World War I, commanded the German 3rd Mountain Division in the invasion of Norway (1940). One of Hitler's favorite generals, he rose to the rank of Generaloberst (equivalent to a U.S. four-star general) and commanded the 20th Mountain Army on the northern Eastern Front. He died in a plane crash in 1944.
