Biographical History

Jules Henry Matthey was born in Switzerland in 1813 or 1816. He married Emma Hacker (1824-1908) of an established New Orleans, Louisiana, family, retaining ties in that city while pursuing business dealings in Mexico. Matthey and two of his four children died in 1853 during a major yellow fever epidemic in New Orleans.

Julius H. Matthey (1851-1924), the youngest child of Jules and Emma Matthey, received a thorough education in New Orleans before going to Texas in 1872. He eventually settled in the northwestern Bexar County town of Helotes, where he taught school for a number of years, interspersed with travels in and out of Texas. He later relocated to southern Bexar County, again teaching school and traveling. Matthey eventually settled in the town of Losoya, where he established a general merchandise store that he operated from about 1895 to 1911. Julius Matthey married Josefa Ybarra (1863-1937) in Bexar County, Texas, on 1900 July 19. They were the parents of four children: Emma (1900-1924), Julius L. (1901-1958), Josephine (1903-1904), and Robert (born 1904).
