Biographical History
Clifford Bax was a diverse and talented writer, prolific and opinionated, perhaps best known for his verse plays. Born into an affluent family, Bax was greatly influenced by reading traditional English poets in his teens. He also developed an interest in mysticism, and later in Buddhism and Platonistic theories, all of which influenced his work and worldview; although he became a successful playwright, poet, novelist, critic, editor, and biographer, the mystical ideals espoused in his works coupled with his distaste for the popular realistic drama of his day seemed out of step with his contemporary audience.
