Alfred Tennyson is generally regarded as the leading poet of Victorian England. The fourth of twelve children born to a Lincolnshire rector, Tennyson's family circumstances were often turbulent. He published a book of poems in his teens, and attended Trinity College; although he made lasting friendships and furthered his reputation as a poet, financial issues prevented his taking a degree. He gradually earned his reputation as England's most gifted poet, beginning with the 1842 publication of Poems, and firmly established with the 1855 publication of Maud and Other Poems. Poet Laureate from 1850 until his death, Tennyson's poems rely on traditional forms, and are renowned for their remarkable imagery, cadence, and Tennyson's poetic ear. He was the most famous English author of his era, and became Baron Tennyson in 1884, the first English writer raised to the peerage.

Alfred Tennyson was born on 6 August 1809 at Somersby, Lincolnshire. At the age of seven he was sent to live with his grandmother at Louth where he attended Louth Grammar School. He returned home in 1820 to be educated by his father. In 1827 he entered Trinity College Cambridge, where he won the Chancellor's Gold Medal in 1828 for his poem Timbuctoo . Tennyson published Poems Chiefly Lyrical in 1830 and Poems in 1832, which were given a mixed reception by several periodicals. In 1842 he published another volume of poems which established his popularity. Tennyson received a Civil List pension of £200 per year in 1845 and he was appointed Poet Laureate in 1850. In June 1855 Tennyson received the degree of DCL from Oxford University. Tennyson continued writing poetry until the last year of his life. He died on 5 October 1892 at the age of 83.

Poet.

Born on August 6, 1809, in Somersby, Lincolnshire, Tennyson's early poetic influences included Lord Byron and Percy Shelley. In 1827 he began attending Trinity College at Cambridge University. He published his first work, "Poems, chiefly lyrical," in 1830. In 1831, following the death of his father, Tennyson left the university without finishing his degree. He published a second work in 1832 which was poorly reviewed, and he ceased to publish again for ten years.

During this time Tennyson attempted to work in the woodcarving business, but without success. In 1842 his luck changed and his published works were again successful. In 1850 he married Emily Sellwood, and in November of that year he was appointed poet laureate, succeeding William Wordsworth. His family settled in Farringford on the Isle of Wight, and it was at this time that he published his famous, The charge of the light brigade. In 1883 he received a peerage from Queen Victoria.

Tennyson died on October 6, 1892, and is buried in Westminister Abbey.
