Biographical History

William Duncan was born on Oct. 14, 1778 in N.H., the son of John and Margaret Duncan. He married Ruth Gilmore (d. 1821) in 1805 and together they had four children. William served as a Justice of the Peace and as a captain in the 10th company, 32nd regiment of the State Militia in 1810. At various times, he was involved with a wool mill, lumbering, a mill dam, and farming. In 1825 William moved to Mich. with one of his sons, Delamore. William moved to Ohio in 1827 and married Mrs. Lydia Wood (d. 1833). They moved with their children to Prairie Ronde (Kalamazoo County, Mich.), where William served as Brady Township clerk and supervisor, 1830-1834. He erected the first grainery there in 1830. In 1837, William moved to Des Moines (Iowa). He returned to Cass County (Mich.) in 1844. In 1837, William married his third wife, Sarah Jones. He died on Nov. 19, 1852. Dr. William Duncan, Confederate Assistant Surgeon with the 10th Georgia Infantry Regiment, stationed in Virginia from 1861-1862. Due to pressing business at his home in Savannah, he returned there in March 1862. But by December of that year, he had been reappointed Assistant Surgeon and served as a medical officer in the Savannah area.
