Biographical History
Charles Latham was born at Birkdale, Lancaster, Lancashire, England, in 1868 , son of James Bevan Latham, JP. He was educated at Wigan High School, Wigan, England; Rivington Grammar School, Lancashire; Owen's College, Manchester, England; and the School of Mines at Wigan. After completing his education he was articled for a period of five years to Moss Hall Coal Co , Chesire, England, before becoming the assistant general manager for that company for two years. He became a Lecturer on Mining for Lancashire County Council in 1891, and Lecturer on Mining to Nottinghamshire County Council, England, in 1893, and the Director of Mining Instruction in University College, Nottingham. He was appointed to the Dixon Lectureship on Mining in the University of Glasgow in 1902 . When this lectureship was transformed into the Dixon Chair of Mining Engineering in 1907 , Charles Latham was appointed the first Professor. He held this post for ten years until his death on 27 September 1917 .
