Biographical History

The English Composition Committee was created in 1918 to examine the problem of "illiteracy" at the university, "especially as it reflects itself in the habitual use of poorly written English." The committee established a program under which students deemed deficient in writing were given grades with a composition condition (or CC) attached. Removal of the condition was a requirement for graduation. The program continued into the mid-1960s.
