Biographical History

The Sierra Madre Historical Society was organized in April 21, 1931, commerating the 50th Anniversary of the town's founding. The first meeting took place in the parlor of the Congregational Church, and was sponsored by the Men's Community Club under the club president, Mr. Elmer Green. The society established in its first constitution that its purpose was to collect, preserve, display objects and documents relating to the city's founding. In 1950, the Historical Society published 500 copies of the first volume of the "Annals of Sierra Madre".

The Pinney House is located at 225 N. Lima near West Laurel. It was built by Dr. Elbert B. Pinney in 1887. From 1888 to 1891, it was the Sierra Vista Hotel. From 1894 to 1911, it was the Hotel Sierra Madre, which had several proprietors. From 1911 to 1922, it was the Hord Sanitarium for the treatment of drug and alcohol addiction. From the 1920s to the 1940s, there were several owners who used the building for both commercial and private use. From 1963 to 1987, Hugh and Veronica owned the house. Since the mid-1960s, the rooms of the house have been rented out as apartments. In 1983, the restoration of the structure began. Later that same year, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The restoration was completed in July 1988.

According to the invitations to this social, which are on file in the archives, this event took place on September 23, 1984, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
