Biographical History

William Augustus Chunn, Confederate soldier, was born 7 January 1840, near the French Broad River in Tennessee, lived in Cassville, Georgia, and died there in 1921. He served in the Georgia State Troops (1861-1862) as a 2nd Lieutenant (Company I, 1st Regiment, 1st Brigade), and as a private in the Georgia Infantry (1862-1865; Co. I, 40th Regiment). He was stationed at Screven Point, near Savannah, Georgia, and in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Mississippi, and was involved in the Cumberland Gap and Vicksburg Campaigns. He became commissary sergeant (December, 1862) for his company until his regiment surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina, April 26, 1865. Chunn may have practiced law after the war.
