Biographical History
Pierce was a physician, educated at Harvard, and also an amateur botanist.
George Foster Pierce, Methodist bishop and president of Emory College, was born 3 February 1811, in Greene County, Georgia, and died 4 September 1884, in Sparta, Georgia. Pierce was a son of Lovick Pierce (1785-1879), a Methodist clergyman and physician. He was admitted into the Georgia Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church (1831); became president of Emory College (1848); and was elected bishop in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (1854). As bishop, Pierce spent the first half of each year on his plantation, Sunshine, near Sparta, Georgia, and the latter half on his episcopal visitations.
