Biographical History

James Bennett McCreary (July 8, 1838 - October 8, 1918) was born in Richmond, Kentucky, the son of Dr. Edmund R. and Sabrina (Bennett) McCreary. During the Civil War, McCreary served with John Hunt Morgan in the 11th Kentucky Cavalry. He served as Governor of Kentucky from 1875-1879 and 1911-1915. He served in the US House of Representatives from 1884-1897. He also served in the US Senate 1903-1909. In 1914, McCreary ran for the US Senate, but lost. He died in Richmond in 1918.

Major and lieutenant colonel of the 11th Kentucky Cavalry (C.S.A.), Kentucky governor, and U.S. congressman and senator.

A native of Richmond, Ky., McCreary served under John Hunt Morgan in Tennessee, and in the summer of 1863 participated in Morgan's "Great Raid" through Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. Surrendering to Union forces with his troops on July 29, 1863, McCreary was imprisoned at Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio, Morris Island, S.C. and Fort Pulaski near Savannah, Ga. At the end of Nov., 1864, McCreary was released on exchange and returned to his command, serving until the end of the war.
