Capitol View United Methodist Church (Atlanta, Ga.)

Capitol View Methodist Church was organized on November 11, 1911 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Carpenter, under the direction of the Rev. Joel R. Daves, Presiding Elder of the Atlanta district. Rev. L. B. Simpson was appointed pastor in December. The small congregation held services in the members' homes until 1912. In January of that year the members organized the Sunday School and began to hold meetings in a tent at the corner of Athens Avenue and Deckner Street. The meeting site was later moved to the corner of Dill and Stewart Avenues. A lot was purchased from Mr. John Shannon in May 1912 and the foundation of the church was laid the following year. From 1913 through 1923 the congregation worshipped in this basement, under the direction of Rev. W. T. Watkins. In March 1928 construction was completed on the present church building. Over the years there were many additions made to the building as the congregation grew and the church offered more services. Church membership reached its peak in 1950 when the congregation numbered 1100 and then began a slow decline. In the summer of 1991 membership was too small to support the extensive structure of the church building, so the congregation decided to disband and surrender the property to the North Georgia Conference.
