Biographical History

The president is the chief administrative officer of the University of Nevada, Reno; duties and responsibilities are prescribed by the Board of Regents, and may be assisted in the conduct of the duties of the office by vice-presidents and other administrators. The president may also establish and appoint boards and committees. Joseph E. Stubbs was the third president of the University of Nevada, Reno, called the Nevada State University during his tenure, serving from 1894 until his death in 1914. His administration is credited with starting the process of transforming the school into a university and creating the first favorable recognition Nevada received in higher education. He was also head of the university's State Analytical Laboratory, created in 1895 by the Nevada State Legislature to analyze ore, mineral, soil, or water samples submitted by the citizens of Nevada.
