The McNeil Center for Early American Studies was founded in 1978, under the name of the Philadelphia Center for Early American Studies, with a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The Center is a consortium of academic institutions and historical repositories in the Philadelphia area. It was renamed in honor of its benefactor Robert L. McNeil, Jr., in 1998, the McNeil Center for Early American Studies.
