Consular officer. Full name: William Matthews Blackford.
Lynchburg, Virginia, editor, bank cashier and postmaster.
William Matthews Blackford, journalist, diplomat, financial agent, and banker, was born 19 August 1801, in Frederick County, Maryland and died 14 April 1864. In 1842, Blackford was appointed by President Tyler to the diplomatic post of charge d'affaires in New Grenada (now Colombia). He served in that capacity until 1845, when he and his family moved to Lynchburg, Virginia, where he edited the LYNCHBURG VIRGINIAN, and became postmaster in 1850. In 1852, he became cashier of the Lynchburg Exchange Bank of Richmond, and during the Civil War he served as financial agent at Lynchburg for the Confederate States of America.

William M. Blackford, a native of Virginia, served as United States Chargé d'Affaires at Bogotá, New Granada (Colombia), 1842-1844. His eldest son, William W., accompanied him. Upon returning, he settled in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he became a banker and edited the "Virginian."
