Biographical History

The Pacific Regional Humanities Center (PRHC) was an initiative funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities in 2002 and overseen by the UC Davis Humanities Institute. The PRHC was created to generate humanities research and public programs for the Pacific United States and Territories: California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Marianas and emphasized the study of "place" in its many dimensions. During 2005-2006, the PRHC, in collaboration with the Middle Mountain Foundation, collected oral histories of landowners in the area of the Sutter Buttes. The Sutter Buttes are a small mountain range located in the north Sacramento Valley of California. In 2007 the PRHC was reconceptualized as the California Cultures Initiative, still coordinated by the UC Davis Humanities Institute. The Middle Mountain Foundation, a non-profit organization, was founded in 1989 to "educate the general public in the relevance and importance to society of natural and cultural resources and to encourage preservation, understanding, and good stewardship of such resources."
