Biographical History

Physician and chemist of Charleston and Columbia, S. C.

Physician, author, publisher, and newspaper editor of Columbia, S.C.; native of Charleston, S.C.; son of William Hasell Gibbes, a Charleston lawyer; graduate of South Carolina College and the Medical College of the State of South Carolina, Gibbes purchased a medical practice in Columbia during 1830s; Gibbes also owned a textile mill, and was well known for his art collection and his studies of geology and paleontology; he lost his home including its art, mineral, and fossil collections in the burning of Columbia in 1865; as husband of Carolina Elizabeth Guignard, Gibbes had twelve children and died in Oct. 1866.

Maintained memberships in following organizations: American Association for the Advancement of Science; the New York, Georgia, and Pennsylvania Histical Societies; National Institute, Washington, D.C.; Royal Society of Northern Antiquarians of Copenhagen of the Acadademy of Natural Science, Philadelphia; Boston Society of Natural History; Lyceum of Natural History of New-York; the National Academy of Design of New-York; and others.
