Biographical History
Zion's Co-operative Mercantile Institution was established in 1868 in Salt Lake City, Utah. It brought together a wide variety of goods for the Mormon community, with additional stores located throughout the Intermountain West. The company was sold to May Department Stores in 1999.
Brigham Young organized the Zion's Co-operative Mercantile Institution (ZCMI) in 1868 as an organization of community-owned retail stores run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Numerous stores were located throughout Utah and Idaho which sold merchandise like clothing, wagons, machinery, sewing machines, and carpets, as well as items produced by the Saints themselves. ZCMI later operated as a publicly owned company, until it was sold to the May Department Store Company in 1999.
Cooperative department store owned by Mormons.
