Princess Sophia Dorothea and Count Philip Christopher Graf von Knigsmark

Princess Sophia Dorothea of Celle (1666-1726) married George Lewis, the future King George I, on 21 November 1682. She bore him two children, including the future George II, but their relationship cooled, and she was accused of intriguing with Count Philip Christopher Graf von Knigsmark (1665-1694), a member of the Swedish nobility and an adventurer. Knigsmark disappeared on 1 July 1694 and was never seen again. Subsequently, George divorced Sophia, who was held as a prisoner at Ahlden, near Celle, until her death on 3 November 1726.

Sir Adolphus William Ward (1837-1924) attended Peterhouse, Cambridge, before becoming professor of history and English language and literature at Owens College, Manchester, in 1866. He was vice-chancellor of Victoria University, 1886-1890 and 1894-1896, and its principal, 1889-1897. Ward was master of Peterhouse, 1900-1924.
