William H. Whitney.
William H. Whitney was a lieutenant in the 38th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteers, during the Civil War. He served in various units in Louisiana under the general command of Major General Nathaniel Banks.
Union officer in the 38th Massachusetts Infantry. On the day after the September 18 letter Whitney was wounded in the battle of Opequon (3rd battle of Winchester) and was discharged from the service in December.
