Biographical History

Ralph Marcus was born in San Francisco on August 17, 1900. He received his B.A. from Columbia University summa cum laude in 1919. He received his A.M. from Columbia in 1920 and his Ph.D. in 1927. He was a lecturer in Semitic languages at Columbia University and later a professor of Semitic philology at the Jewish Institute of Religion. In 1943 he became an associate at the University of Chicago and in 1950 he became professor of Hellenistic Culture, serving as a faculty member in the Department of Oriental Languages and Literatures, Classics, and the Federated Theological Faculty.

Marcus died on December 25, 1956.
