Biographical History

Robert B. Knott, the son of George M. and Sophronia J. Knott, was born in Natchitoches, La., in 1873. He served as mayor in both Zwolle, La. (1898-1902) and Ruston, La. (1910-1922). After serving on both the Ruston and Lincoln Parish school boards, Knott served in the Louisiana State Senate from 1928 to 1932. He was one of the senators who signed Governor Huey P. Long's "Round Robin" during his impeachment trial in the Senate in 1929, which meant that Knott pledged to vote against Long's impeachment. In 1930, Knott was appointed to a six-year term on the Louisiana Tax Commission. He also unsuccessfully ran for U.S. Congress in 1930 and the state senate in 1940. Knott married Margaret May Hammett and the couple had three daughters and one son. His brother, William Milton Knott, married Clara Long, the older sister of Governors Huey and Earl Long, in 1915.
