Biographical History
Born in Rapides Parish to James Carey Workman, a physician who had relocated from Pennsylvania to Louisiana, and Martha Adelaide Cheney, a Louisiana native, James H. Workman and his elder brother John David Workman were separated when their mother died and James and his younger sister were sent to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to be cared for by paternal relatives. John David Workman, who remained in Louisiana, enrolled at Louisiana State Seminary of Learning and Military Academy, interrupting his studies to join the 1st Louisiana Brigade at the beginning of the Civil War. He died at the battle of Fisher's Hill on October 22, 1864, becoming the first student at Louisiana State Seminary of Learning and Military Academy to be killed in the Civil War. Raised in Pennsylvania, James H. Workman joined the 6th Cavalry Regiment in the Union Army, and came into direct conflict with his brother's Louisiana brigade.
