Plant physiologist and biochemist, educator, author and university executive; B.A., M.A. and Ph.D., U. of California, Berkeley, (1929, 1930 and 1933), M.A., U. of Pennsylvania, (hon-1971); faculty, U. of Rochester (1935-1946); faculty, U. of Pennsylvania (1946-1975); provost, U. of Pennsylvania (1961-1970); home secretary, National Academy of Sciences (1975-1979); served as a consultant, President's Science Advisory Committee (1961-1963); chairman, Ad Hoc Panel on drug abuse for White House (1962); served on National Advisory Council on Health Research Facilities of National Institutes of Health (1962-1968); served on Health Sciences Advancement Award Panel of National Institutes of Health (1963-1970); served on National Academy of Science's Committee on USSR and Eastern Europe (1964-1968); research contributed to large-scale production of penicillin, bacitracin and vitamin B₂ during World War II and his investigations of the mechanisms of enzymes and cellular respiration led to the promulgation of the existence of a relationship between respiration in plants and animals.
