Rice, Howard C. (Howard Crosby), 1904-1980

Historian and author, Rice directed Princeton's Department of Rare Books and Special Collections during the 1960s.

Howard C. Rice was a graduate of Dartmouth and received the degree of Docteur de l'Université from the University of Paris. After service in World War II, he was Director of the United States Information Library in Paris.

In 1948, Rice was appointed Assistant University Librarian for Rare Books and Special Collections at Princeton by University Librarian Julian Boyd, for whom he had done research in France connected with THE PAPERS OF THOMAS JEFFERSON. At Princeton, Rice planned and installed a number of exhibitions highlighting Library collections, and was for many years chairman of the editorial board of THE PRINCETON UNIVERSITY LIBRARY CHRONICLE.

Howard C. Rice, Jr., was born in Brattleboro, Vermont. He received the degree of Docteur de l'Université de Paris in 1933. After World War II he served as Director of the United States Information Library in Paris in the U.S. embassy. From 1948 till his retirement in 1970, Rice was an Associate Professor at Princeton University, Assistant Librarian for the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, and editorial consultant to the PAPERS OF THOMAS JEFFERSON editorial project at Princeton. His publications include several articles and book reviews on historical, literary, artistic, and bibliographical subjects. His book THOMAS JEFFERSON'S PARIS, published by Princeton University Press, 1976, was honored as the first recipient of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation Award for Creative Scholarship in 1978. In 1954 he took a year's leave of absence from his position at the Princeton University Library, so that he can accept a job at the Collége de L'Europe Libre near Strasbourg to organize the library.

Alexander D. Wainwright had a long career as a librarian at Princeton University Library which he joined in 1946 in the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections. In 1948 he was curator of the Morris L. Parrish collection of Victorian novelists. In 1962 he was appointed assistant university librarian for acquisitions. He was editor of the Princeton University Library Chronicle from 1949 to1962. After his retirement in 1982, he still continued to work part-time as treasurer of the "Friends of the Library."
