Biographical History

This collection contains the records of the Quackenbush G.A.R. Post 205, which was organized Jan. 14, 1884 in Owosso, Mich. The minutes of the monthly meeting depict a preoccupation with the needs of the members. The financial records show continued expenditures for clothing, food, medicine, and burial expenses of the veterans and their families. Memorial Day services and military burials were also primary activities of the Post. Development of the soldiers plats, a 66 square foot area in Oakhill Cemetery, was one of the Post's foremost projects. The minutes also contains the veterans reminiscence of their military service. The interaction of the Post with the Womans Relief Corps Auxiliary, the Shiawassee Battalion of Veterans, and Sons of Veterans is reflected in the minutes, offering some insight into these organizations. The papers contain biographical and genealogical information on most of its members. The Post disbanded in 1942. See also record group MS 77-115.
