Calvert Vaux was an American architect and landscape designer. Born and trained in England, he came to New York to work with A.J. Downing in 1850, and became a naturalized citizen in 1856. He saw his designs as a way to implement social change, and with this in mind he designed hospitals, museums, suburban residential communities, and numerous public parks, including Central Park; his designs for Central Park became the standard for urban parks, and inaugurated the profession of landscape architect. He worked with many of the leading architects of his day, and had significant influence on the evolution of New York City.
