Biographical History
Epithet: Lieutenant -Colonel
Horatio Walpole, first Baron Walpole of Wolterton (1678-1757), was a diplomatist and politician, the younger brother of Robert Walpole, first earl of Orford. In 1706-7 he served as secretary to General James Stanhope; from 1707 he was secretary to Henry Boyle, Lord Carleton, chancellor of the exchequer; and from 1708 to 1710 he was secretary of state for the northern department. From 1709 to 1711 he was became secretary to the embassy at The Hague, and in 1715 and 1716 he acted as British minister there. In 1717 he received the valuable sinecure of surveyor and auditor-general of the revenue in America for life. From 1721 he was secretary to the Treasury under his brother before becoming cofferer of the royal household in 1730. Also in 1730, he became an English privy councillor, and collaborated closely with Sir Robert Walpole in political affairs. He also worked avidly towards his family's private interests, seeking a hereditary peerage for his eldest son Horatio, and drawing up a mutual entail between his own estate and that of Sir Robert Walpole's much younger grandson, Lord Cholmondeley, to his own benefit. When Sir Robert's surviving children learned accidentally of the entail, it was the cause of much bitter feeling and opposition from his nephew, Horace Walpole.
