Biographical History
The 1925 Clark-McNary Act expanded the provisions of 1911 Federal legislation creating the National Forest System (Weeks Law). It made it easier for the United States Department of Agriculture to buy land from those sellers whose property was located within the National Forest System. The act also enabled the National Forest Service to work with state officials in forest protection and reforestation efforts.
On June 28, 1937, the President approved the establishment of the Civilian Conservation Corps to succeed the Emergency Conservation Work created in 1933. Michigan established camps located on unadministered state lands and on private property subject to fire hazards, state forests, and state game refuges. Early work was devoted to forest fire control activities. Later, the program was increased to include a training program to enable enrollees to perform certain jobs and prepare them for employment outside the camp. Projects included fire lanes and truck trails for fire control, reforestation, development of tourist park facilities for visitors and caretakers, land and water surveys, creel census on lakes and streams, maintenance of mechanical equipment, and construction of highways and airports. Activities of this kind were terminated July 1, 1943.
