William Mixter (1809-1884), son of Jason Mixter (1772-1850) and Susan Cutler Mixter (1777?-1861), was born in Hardwick, Mass. He attended Harvard College, but poor health caused him to withdraw before graduation. He became a merchant in his father's store in Hardwick and served in numerous town offices including treasurer, clerk, and selectman. He was a justice of the peace and served three terms as a state representative and one term as a senator. He married Mary Ruggles ( - ) and had five children by her.
George Mixter (1842-1910), the first son of William and Mary Ruggles Mixter, was born in Hardwick, Mass. He attended Phillips Andover Academy and was graduated from Harvard College in 1863. After working in several woolen mills he was appointed agent for the Derry Mills, Goff's Falls, Manchester, N.H. In 1875 he formed a partnership with George Bullens ( - ) as a banker and mercantile paper distributor in Boston. This partnership was dissolved in 1878, but Mixter continued as a banker for the rest of his life. He also retained his father's farm in Hardwick where he raised a prize winning dairy herd. Mixter never married but was active in hunting and fishing clubs.
