Gustavus Vasa Fox served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy during the Civil War.

Fox served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy during the Civil War, championing the cause of ironclad fighting ships, including John Ericsson's bid to build Monitor. He later made a diplomatic mission to Russia, managed a Massachusetts mill, and wrote on topics including Columbus's landfall in the New World.
The United States' first assistant secretary of the navy, who became Gideon Welles' official assistant during the Civil War, and participated in the first oceanic crossing to Russia following the close of the war.
