Biographical History
Dravo Corporation was a shipbuilding company with shipyards in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Wilmington, Delaware. It was founded by Frank and Ralph Dravo in Pittsburgh during the 1890s. A historical marker at the corner of Neville Island Blvd. and Grand Ave. was dedicated on August 18, 1995 and includes the following text: "During World War II, Dravo's shipyard here was a leader in the manufacture of Landing Ship Tanks (LSTs) for the U.S. Navy. Dravo's over 16,000 workers produced a total of 145 LSTs. This and four other inland yards, all using techniques pioneered by Dravo, contributed two-thirds of the Navy's fleet of over 1,000 LSTs. These amphibious craft proved vital to the success of Allied landings on enemy shores, 1943-45." For more information, please see http://explorepahistory.com/hmarker.php?markerId=978 . Today Dravo Corporation carries on business in the production of lime for industrial, utility and construction applications. The activities of the company include production of lime for utility, metallurgical, pulp and paper, municipal, construction and miscellaneous chemical and industrial applications as well as the development and marketing of related environmental technologies, products and services.
