Biographical History
James Eugene Chaney (b. March 16, 1885, Chaney, Maryland-d. Sept. 1, 1967), Major General in the U.S. Air Force, graduated from West Point in 1908 and served in Europe, Africa, Asia, the Philippines, and Hawaii. In 1918 he was assigned to Headquarters of the Chief of Air Service, American Expeditionary Forces, and commanded the airdrome at Cablenz, Germany. During World War II, General Chaney was commanding general of the First Air Force, commander of the Army Air Forces Basic Training Center, and commander of the Air Forces Western Technical Training Command. He also commanded all U.S. forces on Iwo Jima. At the end of the War, he was named commanding general of the Western Pacific Base Command and later, president, Secretary of War's Personnel Board.
